Contacting The Maintainer
Jeffrey doesn't live here anymore. At least, if you
read the first bullit below, you'll see what he means. Instead, the
server has a new part-time maintainer (so it is being actively developed
and maintained again). What he wrote below very much applies in contacting me.
I get a lot of mail that I
really shouldn't be getting. Before writing to me, please note:
-
I no longer really maintain this site. I really haven't worked
on it since 1996. If there's a link that's broken or something, I suppose
I'll get around to fixing it if someone points it out, but for the most
part I won't be working on it more.
-
Please don't ask about how to write your name in Japanese,
what kanji you should use for a tattoo, or other translation things. Feel
free to use the dictionary as much as you like, but if it's not there,
you'll have to find other means, such as posting to the USENET newsgroup
sci.lang.japan
or to the appropriate language translation
mailing lists.
-
If you have a question about how to get Japanese to work with your
browser or operating system, please ask your browser (or operating
system) vendor. Remember, though, that my server can display Japanese
as GIF images or romaji, so everyone can get quite a bit out of it --
see the instructions. Also, there are links to a bunch of things on the
overview page.
-
If you want to link to this site, feel free. You never, ever need to
ask (linking is what the web is all about). Just do it. If you ask,
I'll tell you "no", so don't ask :-)
-
If you have a question about how the server works, or where the data
comes from, or how to get a local copy of the data for your system,
please read all the documentation that I've already written
before asking. Most email I get would be avoided if people just RTFM
(Read The Fine Manual). One good place to start is the
index page.
-
If you'd like to be so kind as to add to the dictionary data, or
correct problems you might notice within the dictionary data, it is
best to contact the Master of the Data,
Dr. James Breen, directly. Note that he has
nothing to do with this server though. It just uses his data.
-
If you would like to host a mirror of this site to help save the world
(and boast about having your very own local J-E server), feel free to
ask but be warned, it will cost about
200MB (and an account with access to crond) on a UNIX box that can
handle it. This server is quite demanding on CPU and disk I/O.
(Linux, Solaris and FreeBSD are known to work.) I welcome any and
all inquiries for hosting a mirror.
-
Sorry, this server is not available for personal download for installation
to a local computer. It isn't designed for that nor are there any
resources to provide the likely high volume of support. You are much
better off downloading an application like JWPce instead, found at
any good
ftp.cc.monash.edu.au
mirror near you.
-
If you'd like to report a bug, please be specific. Simply stating that
a feature doesn't work, doesn't exactly help. What options did you
select? What search term did you use? Also, if you would like to
report a server problem, please state with which mirror you are having
a problem with.
-
If you would like to contribute a translation of these pages, thus
making this server more than a simple Japanese<->English site, by all
means do so, but remember: The dictionary data is the biggest amount
of the work, and you should co-ordinate that part of the effort with
Dr. James Breen, directly. Both Jim and myself
would very much appreciate the effort. Otherwise, just translating
the pages found here would be enough.
Given all the above, if need be, the maintainer can be reached at
wfms at acm.org
.
